Campania House

Campania House is the oldest Private house in Australia.

Lieutenant George Gunning was sent by his superior officer, Governor Macquarie, to Hobart Town in 1810 as Magistrate, and given a grant on the Coal River. Construction of Campania House in graceful Georgian proportions of sandstone and cedar was finished in 1813 while the farmland began producing very efficiently.

Campania House offers Colonial accommodation on 3 levels. Formal bedrooms on the first floor with open fires and heating in every room, bright cosy attics on the top floor with views over the verdant valley. A comprehensive cellar stocking all the wines of the district complements fresh local produce and all vegetarian needs.

Campania House is on the Register of the National Estate and is in a central area for touring to Kempton, Oatlands, Port Arthur, New Norfolk and Bothwell. Campania House is 7 km from equally historic Richmond and half an hour from Hobart.
