Introduction
The Stud was formed in 1990 with the purchase of foundation females from the Mont Bello Stud, Cygnet Tasmania. All but one of these females are still in the herd today. With these females came Mont Bello Costa Plenty, our first sire and the sire of Top Boy who sold at the 1995 Sydney Royal Show for a third top price of $9,000. Other females were sourced from Studbrook, Academy, Warrensville, Merawah, Doonbiddie, Kinross Park and Karawina. From Tasmania we obtained Valma and Boonamarah with Boonamarah Heather who did so much for us.
Ivy Bank Highpower was purchased at the 1992 Sydney Royal, he is still working in the Stud. He had an immediate impact on the herd giving a full frame in lift and adding muscle. His first son, The Granary Highpower is the first and only Tasmanian Bull to win a Broad Ribbon at the Dubbo National. He is also the highest priced Tasmanian bull at Dubbo at $6,500.
In 1993 at Dubbo we purchased Mileura The Boss. The mighty Boss is as sound today as when he was purchased. Boss sons are now in herds in most states of Australia. He has daughters in 16 different stud herds.
Bronwyn Sensation was purchased at Naracoorte in 1993. He is still in the herd today and working well.
Our latest sire is Camden View Profit Maker who was purchased in 1998 at the Sydney Royal. He is the ultimate heifer bull. He has the best shoulders we have seen in a bull. We have used him over maiden heifers, all have calved to date, unseen.
In 1993 we joined Group Breedplan and have performance recorded since that time, which includes at least an annual scan for fat and EMA. Then 1998 we joined the Cattlecare Program and have successfully completed our second audit.
We do show our cattle and have been Most Successful Exhibitor at Royal Hobart Show for the following years:-
1994 1995 1996 1997 1998 1999 Most Successful Exhibitor at Royal Hobart Show was won by Oceanview
aaaaaaPHS with their four exhibits all The Granary prefix. There have been six Performance Classes at the Royal Hobart:-
1999 – 3 classes all won by The Granary (Boss’s 2IC 2 wins and Peirce Brosnan 1 win) There were sixteen bulls in each class.
2000 – 3 more classes were held (2 won by Dynasty and 1 by The Granary Thunderball, Peirce’s brother).
Females
I was told when we started breeding that most studs are formed around two to three females and that the really good ones would have up to five. We set out to try and put our stud into a strong position with our female herd. Purchases were made from the following studs: Mont Bello, Academy, Studbrook, Valma, Quamby Plains, Pallabah, Margfred Park, Dunhallen, Warrensville, Merawah, Attanga, Boonamarah, Kyoga, Doonbiddie, Karawina, Camden View and Nahar.
Some were bought as heifers but most had a calf at foot and if possible were back in calf. (i.e. Studbrook Irish Maid bought her calf Studbrook Duchess with her and was in calf to Kingston Enfield. The resulting bull-calf The Granary Enfield was later sold for $2,500 to a Victorian buyer).
We are still looking for female lines, we still get every catalogue possible and buy over the phone if necessary to get what we need to continue our development.
